PROTECTING OUR PROTECTORS
Mental Health and Wellness for Law Enforcement

Protecting Our Protectors: Mental Health and Wellness for Law Enforcement is a comprehensive training program developed by 1st Source Defense, LLC to address the mental-health, wellness, crisis-response, leadership, and organizational challenges facing today's law-enforcement professionals.
Law-enforcement officers are trained to respond when others are experiencing their most difficult moments. Yet repeated exposure to trauma, critical incidents, violence, loss, organizational stress, shift work, public scrutiny, and the demands of the profession can also affect the people behind the badge.
Protecting Our Protectors is designed to help change that conversation.
In this Program
Protecting Our Protectors explores critical issues affecting officers throughout their careers, including occupational and cumulative stress, trauma exposure, hypervigilance, sleep and fatigue, burnout, compassion fatigue, moral injury, depression and anxiety indicators, emotional withdrawal, substance misuse, family and relationship strain, suicide risk, crisis communication, de-escalation, peer support, supervisor responsibility, organizational culture, officer retention, referral systems, and community partnerships.
The Four-Day Academy
The comprehensive academy progresses through four interconnected areas:
-
Day 1 — Understanding Officer Mental Health & Officer Crisis
Participants examine occupational stress, cumulative trauma, behavioral changes, warning signs, barriers to seeking help, and the progression from routine stress to distress, impairment, crisis, or emergency. -
Day 2 — Officer Crisis Recognition & Response
Participants move from recognition to action by developing practical skills in crisis communication, de-escalation, suicide awareness and intervention, immediate safety considerations, referral, response, and follow-up. -
Day 3 — Officer Wellness & Organizational Responsibility
The focus shifts toward prevention, recovery, resilience, relationships, sleep, healthy coping, leadership responsibility, psychological safety, peer support, agency wellness systems, and creating a culture that supports both wellness and professional accountability. -
Day 4 — Officer Resources, Retention, Community Partnership & Integration
Participants bring the program together by examining resource systems, warm referrals, officer retention, community partnerships, implementation strategies, and practical steps agencies can take to strengthen their wellness infrastructure.
